What you will find here
This category holds loose, unset diamonds. Most are single natural white diamonds between about 0.3 and 1 carat, with larger stones up to 3 carats and more. There are also matched pairs for earrings, natural fancy coloured diamonds in yellow, brown and orange, and small colour-treated stones sold in groups. Most stones here are between EUR 2,500 and EUR 21,000.
Reading a diamond title
A title such as "1 pcs Diamond (Natural) - 1.00 ct - Round - F - VVS2 - IGI" gives the number of stones, the type, carat weight, shape, colour grade, clarity grade and the laboratory that graded it.
- Colour: D is colourless, and grades run down the alphabet. D-F are colourless, G-J near colourless.
- Clarity: IF (internally flawless), then VVS1-2, VS1-2, SI1-2 and I1-3, from fewest to most visible inclusions.
- Cut: shorthand such as EX EX EX means excellent cut, polish and symmetry. "None" refers to fluorescence.
- Shape: round, cushion, emerald, pear, oval, radiant, heart, princess and marquise.
Natural, coloured and treated
Natural coloured diamonds take their colour from nature. Colour-treated diamonds have had their colour changed or enhanced in a laboratory; they are real diamonds but are priced well below natural coloured stones.
Before you buy
Match the report number in the description with the laboratory's online database, which most labs offer free. Remember that a loose stone needs a setting; ask a jeweller about mounting costs. Shipping is free and each product page shows its ship-by date.
Frequently asked questions
What do diamond colour grades like D, F or H mean?
Diamond colour is graded on a scale from D to Z. D is completely colourless and the rarest. E and F are also colourless to the eye of a trained grader. G to J are near colourless and look white once set, especially in white gold or platinum. From K onwards a faint yellow tint becomes easier to see. Price rises steeply towards D.
What do clarity grades like VVS1 and SI1 mean?
Clarity describes internal features, called inclusions, seen under 10x magnification. IF means internally flawless. VVS1 and VVS2 have very, very slight inclusions, hard to find even under magnification. VS1 and VS2 have very slight inclusions. SI1 and SI2 have slight inclusions, often invisible to the naked eye. I1 to I3 have inclusions that may be visible without magnification.
Which laboratories grade the diamonds in this category?
Stones here are graded by laboratories including the International Gemological Institute (IGI), the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), HRD Antwerp, the Antwerp Laboratory for Gemstone Testing (ALGT) and Gem Report Antwerp (GRA). The laboratory is named in each title. Most offer an online report check, so you can confirm a report number against their records before or after buying.
What is a colour-treated diamond?
A colour-treated diamond is a natural diamond whose colour has been changed or intensified by a laboratory process such as irradiation, heating or coating. It is still a real diamond, but it is valued far below a diamond of the same colour that formed naturally. Titles in this category state clearly when a stone is colour-treated rather than natural coloured.
